About
Fuda Ning is an Assistant Professor in the School of Systems Science and Industrial Engineering at Binghamton University. He holds a PhD in Industrial, Manufacturing, and Systems Engineering from Texas Tech University (2018), and bachelor's and master's degrees in Mechanical Engineering from Dalian University of Technology (2014). His research focuses on additive manufacturing, process innovation, and systems engineering, with a particular emphasis on advanced materials processing, melt pool dynamics, and material extrusion techniques. He leads the AM² Lab, which explores material-process-structure-property relationships in additive manufacturing to develop high-performance components for critical industries. His work has secured $3.6M in funding from NSF, SEMI-FlexTech, and industry partners, resulting in over 90 publications and an H-index of 39.
Education:
- Bachelor's and Master's in Mechanical Engineering, Dalian University of Technology (2011–2014)
- PhD in Industrial, Manufacturing, and Systems Engineering, Texas Tech University (2017–2018)
Research Interests: Dr. Ning's work centers on advancing additive manufacturing technologies, including laser-based and extrusion-based processes, non-traditional machining, and process modeling. His lab investigates material behavior across length scales and employs numerical simulation, analytical modeling, and experimental analysis to optimize manufacturing outcomes. Key areas include metal additive manufacturing, composite materials, and multi-functional component design.
Awards and Recognition:
- NSF CAREER Awardee (2025)
- Stanford’s Top 2% Scientist List (2021–present)
- Editorial Board Member for five manufacturing journals
Grants and Funding: Projects include NSF and industry collaborations totaling $3.6M, supporting research on directed energy deposition, material extrusion, and multi-laser scan optimization. Outputs include 11 high-impact journal articles (IF >10) and over 6,700 citations.
Labs and Teams: The AM² Lab collaborates on projects involving multi-material 3D printing, hybrid electronics, and fatigue-resistant components. Current openings exist for PhD students focused on metal additive manufacturing through experiments and simulations.
