About
Frode Vartdal is a Professor of Immunology at the Department of Immunology and Transfusion Medicine, Faculty of Medicine, University of Oslo. He served as Dean of the Faculty of Medicine from 2011-2014 and has held various leadership positions including Head of Institute of Clinical Medicine (2010) and Head of Faculty Division Rikshospitalet (2006-2009).
His primary research interests include Neuroimmunology and Transplantational Immunology, with specific focus on B-lymphocytes, T-lymphocytes, bone marrow cells, and Multiple Sclerosis. With over 100 scientific publications, his recent work (2015-2023) has centered on B-cell and T-cell responses in Multiple Sclerosis, particularly examining intrathecal antibody production, immune repertoire diversity, and the relationship between viral infections and autoimmune responses in neurological disorders.
His publication trends show a consistent focus on the immunological mechanisms underlying Multiple Sclerosis, with increasing use of advanced techniques like single-cell transcriptomics, proteomics, and high-throughput sequencing of immune repertoires. His work frequently explores the role of Epstein-Barr virus in autoimmune neurological disorders and examines specific immune cell populations in cerebrospinal fluid.
Vartdal has supervised eight PhD candidates throughout his career and has been actively involved in numerous academic committees, including serving as President of the Norwegian Society for Immunology (1999-2002) and as a member of the EU Expert Committee on Biomedical Research (1989-1992).
He received his MD from the University of Oslo in 1975 and his PhD (dr. med.) in 1984. Affiliated with Rikshospitalet (Oslo University Hospital) since 1978, he has held various positions including Research Fellow, Head of Department, and Head of Clinic.
