About
Dr. Freya Harrison is a Reader in the School of Life Sciences at the University of Warwick, UK. Her research focuses on understanding how bacterial pathogens form chronic biofilm infections, particularly in cystic fibrosis lungs, chronic wounds, and ventilator-associated pneumonia. She leads the Harrison Lab, which develops ex vivo and in vitro models to study bacterial behavior and test novel antibiofilm agents. She is a founding member of the interdisciplinary AncientBiotics consortium, exploring historical remedies for modern antibiotic resistance solutions.
Education includes a DPhil in Zoology from the University of Oxford (2004-2007), followed by postdoctoral roles at the Universities of Bath, Nottingham, and Oxford. She has held academic positions at Warwick since 2016, progressing from Assistant Professor to Reader.
Research interests span microbiology, biofilm physiology, and interdisciplinary innovation. Her lab’s models, such as the ex vivo CF lung system, reduce reliance on live animal testing. Collaborations include Perfectus Biomed Ltd for drug testing and跨学科 projects with chemists and humanities scholars to revive medieval remedies. Current funding comes from MRC, BBSRC, and the National Biofilms Innovation Centre.
Teaching involves supervising undergraduate projects in microbiology, antimicrobial testing, and systematic reviews. She advocates for interdisciplinary approaches and ethical research practices.
