Frauke Wiese

Frauke Wiese is an Assistant Professor leading the interdisciplinary junior research group "Energy Sufficiency" at the Europa-Universität Flensburg. She holds a PhD in Energy and Environmental Management from the same institution and conducted postdoctoral research at the Technical University of Denmark (DTU). Her work focuses on energy transition modeling, open-source frameworks, and sufficiency policies. She co-founded the Open Energy Modelling Initiative and developed the renpass energy system model.

Education: Master’s in Energy and Environmental Management (University of Flensburg), PhD in Energy Systems (Europa-Universität Flensburg). Postdoc at DTU’s Energy System Analysis Group.

Research Interests: Sustainable energy systems, sufficiency strategies, open-source modeling, climate policy design, and interdisciplinary energy transition pathways.

Publications highlight her contributions to energy system modeling efficiency, sufficiency in transport and heating sectors, and policy analysis comparing citizen assemblies with national climate plans.

• Awards: Reiner Lemoine Foundation PhD scholarship.

Advising: Supervised over 15 master’s and bachelor’s theses on topics like energy sufficiency indicators, decarbonization pathways, and marine fuel alternatives. Collaborates with the Wuppertal Institute through her research group.

Labs/Teams: Leads the Energy Sufficiency group, co-developed the Balmorel open-source model, and contributed to the renpass framework. Active in the Open Energy Modelling community.
