Franziska Seraphim

Franziska Seraphim is an Associate Professor of History and Director of the Asian Studies Program at Boston College. She holds a Ph.D. from Columbia University. Her research focuses on modern and contemporary Japanese history, with specialties in historical memory, social movements, and global/comparative history.

Her work examines Japan’s postwar engagement with its imperial and wartime past, including studies of transitional justice programs and carceral geographies. Current projects include a global history of Allied justice systems post-WWII, analyzing prisons in Asia and Europe.
