Franz Bernhardt is a Political Geographer and Postdoctoral Research Fellow at Aalborg University, affiliated with the Department of Culture and Learning and the Democracy, Migration and Society group. He is part of the MIX Center for Displacement, Migration and Integration. His work focuses on political geographies of migration, nationalism, citizenship, and asylum, with a recent focus on the 'Enacting Citizenship and Solidarity: From Below' (ECS) project. Previously, he held a postdoctoral fellowship at Swansea University's Department of Geography.
Education includes a PhD in Human Geography from Swansea University (2016–2020), an MLitt in International Political Theory from the University of St Andrews (2014–2015), and a BA in Politics from the University of Stirling (2010–2014).
Research interests include urban and national imaginaries of hospitality, asylum seeker integration, sub-state nationalism, and the intersection of migration and urban policy. His work appears in journals like Political Geography, Cultural Geographies, and Citizenship Studies, as well as book chapters in Collective Movements and Emerging Political Spaces and Introducing Human Geographies.
Recent contributions examine tenant citizenship struggles, the politics of friendship in sanctuary movements, and the discursive construction of Welsh hospitality frameworks. He collaborates on transnational research networks exploring solidarity initiatives and intersectional strategies in Europe.
