Francisco Alpizar Rodriguez

Francisco Alpizar Rodriguez is the Chair and Professor of the Environmental and Natural Resource Economics Group at the Department of Social Sciences, Wageningen University and Research. Previously, he was a senior research fellow at CATIE (Costa Rica) and founded the Latin American and Caribbean Environmental Economics Program. His research focuses on incentive-based approaches to improve natural resource management in developing countries, using behavioral and experimental methods. Key areas include climate change adaptation, payments for ecosystem services, and the management of protected areas. He advises organizations such as the Beijer Institute for Ecologic Economics and contributes to UN reports on biodiversity.

Alpizar’s work spans interdisciplinary collaborations, including projects like the EU-funded WaterLANDS initiative to restore wetlands. He has authored studies in top journals like Nature Sustainability and World Development. His roles include editorial positions and consultancy for global institutions like the World Bank and UNDP. He is based in Wageningen, Netherlands, and actively engages in policy-relevant research.
