Francis Ting

Dr. Francis Ting is a Professor in the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering at South Dakota State University, specializing in fluid mechanics and hydraulic engineering. His research program investigates breaking wave dynamics, bridge hydraulics, and scour processes using experimental and numerical methods.

Education includes a Ph.D. (1989) and M.S. (1983) in Civil Engineering from California Institute of Technology, and a B.S. with honors from University of Manchester Institute of Science and Technology (1982). He teaches Fluid Mechanics, Hydraulic Engineering, and Environmental Fluid Mechanics courses.

Awards include College of Engineering Researcher of the Year (2002, 2012). Current NSF-funded research employs volumetric velocimetry to study sediment suspension under breaking waves. Additional projects examine bed shear stress in open-channel flows and scour prediction in cohesive soils.

Professional memberships include American Society of Civil Engineers and American Geophysical Union. Research has been published in Coastal Engineering, Journal of Hydraulic Engineering, and Journal of Geophysical Research.
