About
Francesca Marchetta is an Assistant Professor at the School of Economics, University of Clermont Auvergne, where she conducts research through the Centre d'Études et de Recherches sur le Développement International (CERDI). She earned her Ph.D. in Development Economics from the University of Florence in 2008 and completed a Jean Monnet Post-Doc Fellowship at the European University Institute before joining CERDI in 2010. In 2021, she completed her Habilitation à diriger des recherches (HDR) on migration, transitions to adulthood, and family dynamics.
Her research focuses on human development with particular emphasis on economic migration, education, labor markets, and gender. Her work frequently examines how climate shocks affect migration patterns, fertility decisions, and educational outcomes, with substantial fieldwork conducted in Madagascar. She has published in top journals including American Journal of Agricultural Economics, Economic Development and Cultural Change, Journal of Development Studies, Review of Economics of the Household, and World Development.
Her recent publications reveal a strong focus on the intersection of climate change, migration, and household decision-making, particularly examining gender dynamics in family structures. Her work on Madagascar has been especially influential, exploring how birth order affects transitions to adulthood and how climate shocks influence migration responses differently across demographic groups.
Since September 2018, she has served as a resource person and expert on gender and inclusion issues for the Partnership for Economic Policy (PEP), demonstrating her expertise in gender-sensitive development approaches.
Marchetta has collaborated extensively with researchers including Hugues Champeaux, Claire Ricard, David Sahn, and Lucia Mangiavacchi, often producing interdisciplinary work that bridges economics, demography, and gender studies. Her recent work on the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on couples' relationships and children's education demonstrates her ability to address timely development challenges.
