Frances Lennard

Frances Lennard is a Professor and Honorary Professorial Research Fellow at the University of Glasgow’s School of Culture & Creative Arts, Department of History of Art. Her work focuses on textile conservation, with a particular emphasis on historical tapestries and Pacific barkcloth. She collaborates with engineering disciplines to apply advanced techniques like digital image correlation (DIC) for strain monitoring and material analysis.

Her research explores structural behavior of textiles under display conditions, material degradation, and non-destructive testing methods. She has authored/co-authored over 50 publications and edited several books, including *Material Approaches to Polynesian Barkcloth* and *Authenticity and Replication*. Lennard’s contributions span international conferences and workshops, advancing interdisciplinary approaches to conservation science.

Her research has been presented at venues like the ICOM-CC Triennial Conference and the Society for Experimental Mechanics Annual Conference. She leads projects integrating engineering and conservation methodologies, emphasizing practical applications for artifact preservation.
