Frances E. Allen (1932–2020) was an American computer scientist renowned for pioneering work in compiler optimization and parallel computing. She spent her career at IBM's Thomas J. Watson Research Center, where she contributed to supercomputer compilers like FORTRAN for the NSA and Los Alamos National Laboratory. As an IBM Fellow (1989), she co-founded the Parallel TRANslation Group (PTRAN) and became the first woman president of the IBM Academy of Technology (1995). She held visiting lectureships at multiple universities and retired in 2002.
Education: B.A. in Mathematics (1954) from SUNY Albany (formerly Albany State Teachers College) and M.A. in Mathematics (1957) from the University of Michigan.
