About
Prof. Frédérique Le Roux is a Full Professor at the University of Montreal's Faculty of Medicine, Department of Microbiology, Infectious Diseases, and Immunology. She leads research on microbial ecology, focusing on Vibrio pathogens, antibiotic resistance, and phage-bacteria coevolution. Her work integrates population genomics and functional studies to understand environmental reservoirs of pathogens and sustainable alternatives to antibiotics.
Education: PhD in Molecular Biology (University of Lyon, 1995), postdoctoral research at Gustave Roussy Institute (1996–1998) and IFREMER (1998–2000). Held positions at Institut Pasteur (2004–2008), Harvard Medical School (2008–2010), and directed the Genomics of Vibrios group at Station Biologique de Roscoff (2010–2023). Joined UMontreal as a Canada Excellence Research Chair in 2023.
Research Interests: Vibrio virulence mechanisms, phage-host coevolution, antibiotic resistance in environmental bacteria, and ecological impacts of marine pathogens. Her lab explores genomic diversity, phage satellites (e.g., PICMIs), and host-pathogen interactions in oysters and crustaceans.
Publications Trends: Recent work emphasizes phage-bacteria coevolution, genomic plasticity, and ecological drivers of pathogen emergence. Key contributions include studies on Vibrio resistance mechanisms and phage-driven evolutionary dynamics.
Awards & Grants: ERC Advanced Grant (2010–2020), Canada Excellence Research Chair (2023–present), 4 ANR grants (2010–2020). Current funding includes projects on eco-evo-patho dynamics and IVADO operational funds.
Advising & Lab: Recruits PhD students (bioinformatics, genetics) and postdocs. Lab focuses on vibrios, phages, and sustainable antibiotic alternatives. Collaborations span microbiology, genomics, and structural biology at UMontreal.
