About
Fortunat Joos is a Professor at the University of Bern's Climate and Environmental Physics division within the Physics Institute. His research focuses on carbon cycle dynamics, biogeochemical cycles, and Earth system modeling, with particular emphasis on paleoclimate reconstructions and future climate projections. He leads investigations into greenhouse gas fluxes, isotopic tracers, and climate-carbon feedback mechanisms using hierarchical modeling approaches.
His research interests span carbon dioxide and methane cycling, climate dynamics, isotopic studies of carbon and other elements, and the development of Earth system models for analyzing past and future climate change impacts. Recent work examines glacial-interglacial carbon budgets, ocean biogeochemical responses to climate change, and constraints on wetland methane emissions.
Joos's publications demonstrate strong trends in paleoclimate reconstruction, climate metric development, and carbon cycle feedback quantification. His 2023-2025 articles frequently involve multi-model analyses of carbon-climate interactions, examination of climate intervention strategies, and high-resolution paleoclimate simulations using models like Bern3D and WRF.
He coordinates collaborative projects including the CO₂ Impulse Response Function Intercomparison and AERA-MIP (Adaptive Emission Reduction Approach Model Intercomparison Project). As Principal Investigator, he oversees research on ocean carbon sinks, peatland-climate interactions, and terrestrial carbon-nitrogen cycle coupling.
