Florian Edler

Prof. Florian Edler holds a professorship in Music Theory at the University of the Arts Bremen (HfK Bremen), serving as Dean of the Music Department since 2022. He previously held lecturer positions at UdK Berlin, HfK Bremen, and Weimar's Franz Liszt University of Music. His academic background includes a PhD from UdK Berlin (2009) and extensive administrative experience, including managing a professorship at Hochschule Osnabrück (2013–15).

Edler's research focuses on music theory from the 17th to 20th centuries, with recent projects exploring Russian/Soviet music (c. 1850–present) and pedagogical methodologies. He co-chaired the 18th German Music Theory Society (GMTH) Congress in Bremen (2018) and served as co-editor of the ZGMTH journal (2019–21). As GMTH President (2020–24), he advanced music-theoretical discourse through editorial and leadership roles.

Teaching responsibilities include advanced analysis seminars, music theory pedagogy, and ear training methodology for MA/Musik Gymnasium programs. His public engagement includes curating events like the 2022 Schumann retrospective and interdisciplinary exhibitions linking music theory with performance practices.
