About
Floor Alkemade is Full Professor and Chair of Economics and Governance of Technological Innovation at Eindhoven University of Technology, within the School of Industrial Engineering and Innovation Sciences and the Department of Technology, Innovation & Society. Her research focuses on innovation for sustainability, cleantech development, and the economic governance of technological transitions.
Professor Alkemade's research interests include sustainability transitions, innovation economics, renewable energy systems, and agent-based modeling of socio-technical systems. She employs data-driven approaches to analyze innovation dynamics across multiple scales, from individual behavior in smart grids to national innovation capacities in cleantech.
Analysis of Professor Alkemade's recent publications reveals three dominant themes: (1) community-centered energy transitions focusing on governance and social acceptance; (2) decision-support frameworks for local energy planning; and (3) systemic analyses of innovation ecosystems and tipping points in sustainability transitions. Her work consistently integrates computational social science methods with policy-relevant applications.
Major Scientific Awards:
- ERC Consolidator Grant for 'Fostering social tipping dynamics to Accelerate Sustainability Transitions (FAST)' (2022)
- NWO Vidi Grant for 'The Cleantech Innovation Capacity of Countries' (2014)
- NWO Veni Grant (2008)
Professor Alkemade leads multiple large-scale projects including NEON (New Energy Outlook for the Netherlands) and FLEXINet, investigating integrated hybrid storage technologies. She coordinates interdisciplinary teams examining the societal dimensions of energy communities and develops simulation tools to support local energy planning decisions.
