Fiona Nicholls is a Senior Lecturer in Outdoor Adventure Education at Plymouth Marjon University's School of Education, where she plans and delivers degree-level programs. As a registered outdoor practitioner, she holds an MA in Professional Studies (Outdoor Education) from Keele University, PGCE in Secondary Geology and Science, and BSc in Applied Science (Earth Science) from Kingston University.
Her research examines place-based learning methodologies, socially constructed relationships between risk and learning, and urban outdoor education contexts. Recent projects include archaeological learning initiatives for primary education and critical analysis of the 'Comfort Zone Model' in adventure pedagogy. Nicholls advocates for integrating socio-cultural and historical dimensions into outdoor education to enrich student experiences.
Professional engagements include committee membership for European Institute for Outdoor Adventure Education and South West Regional Institute for Outdoor Learning. She serves on Plymouth Youth Sailing Committee representing Plymouth Marjon University.
