Fiona Barclay

Dr. Fiona Barclay is a Senior Lecturer at the University of Stirling's Department of Literature and Languages, within the Faculty of Arts and Humanities. She also serves as Associate Dean (Internationalisation) and Postgraduate Director. Her academic journey includes a PhD from the University of Glasgow and prior professional experience in marketing at a FTSE50 company. Her research focuses on postcolonial France, North African colonial history, and language policy, with notable projects funded by the AHRC and Scottish Government.

Education: BA (French) from University of Glasgow, MSc (Marketing) from University of Strathclyde, PhD (French Studies) from University of Glasgow.

Research Interests: Explores memory, trauma, and postcolonial identity through French literature and film, particularly regarding Algeria's colonial legacy. Current projects include 'From colonisers to refugees' (AHRC-funded) and 'Remembering Empire', which addresses colonial history in education. She also investigates language-learning disparities and policy in Scotland.

Awards/Grants: AHRC Leadership Fellowship (2018-2022), AHRC Impact Grant (2022-2023), Scottish Government 'Migration and Empire' Project (2024-2025).

Advising & Grants: Supervises PhD students researching French immigration, post-independence African literature, and Scotland's language policy. Leads interdisciplinary projects linking academia with schools and policymakers.

Labs/Teams: Principal Investigator for multiple projects, including 'Pieds-Noirs' migration studies and language education initiatives. Collaborates with SCILT, Scotland's National Centre for Languages, and chairs the University Council for Languages Scotland.
