Fia Backström

Fia Backström is Associate Professor in the School of Art at The Cooper Union. An interdisciplinary artist and writer, she represented Sweden at the 2011 Venice Biennale and participated in the Whitney Biennial (2008) and Greater New York at PS1 (2016). Her exhibitions span major institutions including MoMA, Centre Pompidou, Serpentine Gallery, and Moderna Museet.

Backström's publications include 'COOP A-Script' (Primary Information, 2016) and 'Fia Backström' (Sternberg Press, 2011). She received the Bernard Heidsieck Literary Prize (2018) and Borlem Prize (2024) for innovative contributions to art and literature. Her practice investigates language systems, social structures, and exhibition formats through conceptual frameworks.
