Fernando S. Mendoza is a Professor of Pediatrics and Associate Dean of Minority Advising and Programs at Stanford University School of Medicine. He has been a Stanford faculty member since 1981 and held roles such as Division Chief of General Pediatrics at Lucile Packard Children’s Hospital (1996–2014). His research focuses on Latino child health, workforce diversity, and health disparities. He leads the HRSA-funded Center of Excellence grant, developing programs to increase underrepresented minorities in medicine.
Dr. Mendoza’s work addresses health care access for Latino and immigrant children, obesity, and chronic disease management. He authored the first national study on Latino representation in pediatric faculty, highlighting diversity gaps. He has received awards from the AAMC, Stanford Alumni, and the National Latino Medical Student Association.
His contributions extend to policy roles: founding local community clinics, serving on NIH and IOM committees, and advising the National Institute of Minority Health. His research underscores the intersection of social determinants and pediatric health outcomes.
