Fernando Ribeiro

Fernando Ribeiro serves as Assistant Professor in the Department of Modern Languages, Cultures and Literatures at NOVA University Lisbon's Faculty of Social Sciences and Humanities (FCSH), where he maintains active affiliation with CHAM - Center for Humanities research unit.

He earned his PhD in German Modern Literature from FCSH in 1996, establishing his academic foundation in 20th-century literary studies.

Dr. Ribeiro's research centers on German-language literature and culture of the 20th century, with particular emphasis on its manifestations in Portuguese literary traditions during the same era's first quarter. His work examines Portuguese authors' engagements with German culture, comparative analyses of English and French literatures from the period, and explores fundamental themes of metaphor and silence within modernist frameworks. Additional focus areas include Luso-German historical relations and literary theory development.

His professional activities encompass extensive translation of 20th-century German literary works by Hesse, Zweig, Kafka, and others, alongside national and international conference presentations examining German cultural influences in Portugal. Research projects investigate A. Castro Osório, H. O'Neill, and Fernando Pessoa's connections to German intellectual traditions.

As a core member of CHAM - Center for Humanities, Dr. Ribeiro contributes to ongoing research initiatives exploring cultural and literary exchanges between German and Portuguese intellectual spheres, with particular attention to modernist poetics and cross-cultural reception.
