Fernanda Guida

Fernanda Guida serves as an Assistant Professor in the Department of World Languages and Cultures at Spelman College, where she has been a faculty member since 2021. Previously, she directed the Portuguese Program at the University of Pennsylvania's Lauder Institute and coordinated the Summer Immersion Program in Brazil, while also serving as the overseas coordinator for the University of Georgia's Portuguese Flagship Program. Her academic focus centers on Brazilian and Lusophone literary and cultural studies within foreign language education.

Dr. Guida earned her Ph.D. and M.A. in Romance Languages from the University of Georgia with dual specializations in Portuguese language/literature and Spanish culture/literature. Her undergraduate training includes a B.A. in English Language, Literature and Translation from Universidade Federal de Minas Gerais, Brazil.

Her research investigates 20th-21st century Lusophone literature through interdisciplinary lenses, examining how history and politics manifest in cultural production. She pioneers work in adaptation studies and intermediality, particularly analyzing connections between literature and other media forms like film and music, while advancing methodologies in foreign language acquisition pedagogy.

Her publications reveal consistent interdisciplinary innovation: the 2016 book chapter explores video conferencing and student partnerships in language classrooms, the 2016 article analyzes music-literature intermediality, and the 2014 book review examines arts-based approaches to Portuguese language studies, collectively demonstrating her commitment to bridging cultural analysis with language education.
