Fermín Labarga García

Fermín Labarga García serves as Full Professor of Church History within the Department of Biblical Studies and Church History at the Faculty of Theology, University of Navarra, Spain. He leads the research group “TRENTUN: Trent in the Hispanic World. Individual, Social, and Cultural Renewal,” examining the Council of Trent’s impact on Hispanic religious culture.

His educational background features dual doctorates from the University of Navarra:

• 2012: “The Holy School of Christ: a peculiar institution of the Spanish Baroque” (supervised by Dr. Jesús María Usunáriz Garayoa)
• 2000: “Las cofradías de la Vera Cruz en La Rioja” (supervised by Dr. Elisa Luque Alcaide)

Professor Labarga García’s research centers on Spanish religious traditions, with internationally recognized expertise in popular religiosity phenomena. His primary focus explores lay and clerical brotherhoods/congregations and Holy Week rituals, while secondary work analyzes modern-era Spanish beatification and canonization processes. This dual-track approach reveals connections between institutional ecclesiastical frameworks and grassroots religious expression in Hispanic contexts.

As Principal Investigator of TRENTUN, he directs collaborative investigations into Trentine reforms’ societal manifestations across Hispanic territories. His leadership fosters interdisciplinary analysis of how theological doctrines translated into cultural renewal at individual and communal levels through concrete historical case studies.
