Felix Schnell is a Senior Lecturer in Modern History at the School of Philosophical, Historical, and Interdisciplinary Studies, University of Essex. He holds a Ph.D. from Bielefeld University (2004) and a post-doctoral degree (Habilitation) from Humboldt University of Berlin (2011). His research examines violence, authoritarianism, and societal conflict in modern Russian and Ukrainian history, with recent focus on Holocaust perpetrators and paramilitary cultures.
Research interests include:
- Violence as a historical and social phenomenon
- Group militancy in revolutionary contexts
- Perpetrator psychology in Nazi Germany
His publications analyze paramilitary formations, police battalions in the Holocaust, and Russian-Ukrainian relations. Recent works explore performative justification of violence in wartime correspondence and imperial metamorphosis post-WWI.
