Dr. Felice Coles is a Professor of Spanish and Linguistics at the University of Mississippi, serving as Graduate Program Coordinator for the Ph.D. in Second Language Studies. She is affiliated with the Department of Modern Languages within the College of Liberal Arts. Her research focuses on Spanish in the United States, dialects of American English, and the obsolescence of minority languages.
Dr. Coles teaches courses such as Introduction to Linguistics, Dialects of American English, and Hispanic Linguistics at both undergraduate and graduate levels. She edits the Southern Journal of Linguistics and advises two honor societies: Alpha Lambda Delta and Phi Sigma Iota.
Her publications include the book Isleño Spanish (1999) and articles exploring Isleño Spanish sociolinguistics, cultural identity, and language variation. She has received notable recognitions including the 2013 Humanities Teacher Award and Teacher of the Year from the University of Mississippi’s College of Liberal Arts.
Dr. Coles holds a B.A. in Spanish from Louisiana State University (1981), an M.A. in Linguistics from the University of Utah (1983), and a Ph.D. in Linguistics from the University of Texas at Austin (1991).
