Fakhri Karray

Roles and Affiliations: Fakhri Karray is a Professor and Loblaws Research Chair in Artificial Intelligence at the University of Waterloo’s Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering. He co-founded the Waterloo Artificial Intelligence Institute as its founding co-director. He is also the Chief Scientist of Yourika.ai.

Research Interests: His work focuses on intelligent systems design, machine learning, multi-sensor data fusion, cognitive robotics, and smart mobility. Applications include IoT, virtual care, and natural man-machine interaction. He has authored over 20 US patents and co-authored the textbook Soft Computing and Intelligent Systems Design (2004).

Editorial Contributions: He serves as an Associate Editor for IEEE Transactions on Cybernetics, IEEE Transactions on Neural Networks and Learning, and the Elsevier Journal of Information Fusion. He has held editorial roles for multiple journals and conferences.

Awards and Recognition: Notable honors include Fellowships from IEEE, the Canadian Academy of Engineering, and the Engineering Institute of Canada. He has delivered keynote/plenary talks at over 20 international conferences since 2002 and received the IEEE Distinguished Lecturer designation (2016).

Leadership and Outreach: He has chaired/co-chaired numerous international conferences, including the IEEE International Conference on Automation and Logistics and the International Conference on Image Analysis and Recognition. He actively promotes interdisciplinary research through initiatives like the Center for Pattern Analysis and Machine Intelligence (CPAMI).
