Dr. Faith Chiu is a Lecturer in Phonetics at the University of Glasgow (since 2023), previously at the University of Essex (2020-2022). She holds a PhD in Speech, Hearing and Phonetic Sciences from University College London (2018) and conducted postdoctoral research at the University of York (2018-2019). Her research focuses on speech perception in adverse conditions, including cognitive load, background noise, and accent variability. She employs experimental methods from psychoacoustics and cognitive neuroscience. Dr. Chiu is affiliated with the Modern English Language & Linguistics research group and teaches courses such as Phonetics 1 & 2 and Methods in Phonetics.
Research Interests: Speech perception, hearing science, phonetics, cognitive psychology, experimental phonology, and language/accent attitudes. Her work explores how listeners adapt to challenging listening environments, including the impact of face masks on speech perception and cross-linguistic vowel/consonant perception.
Grants: Principal Investigator of the British Academy-funded project Communicating through COVID-19 and beyond: a multi-language study of speech perception in adverse listening conditions.
Supervision: Advising Vera Yujia Yao on prosody in bilingual language communities. She welcomes PhD applicants in speech perception, hearing science, and sociophonetics.
