Fadia Shaya

Fadia T. Shaya, PhD, MPH, is a tenured Professor at the University of Maryland School of Pharmacy and an affiliate professor at the University of Maryland School of Medicine. She directs the Informatics Core at the Institute for Clinical and Translational Research and serves as Executive Director of the Behavioral Health Research and Resource Team (BHRT). Dr. Shaya also holds leadership roles on the Faculty Advisory Council of the Maryland Higher Education Commission and the Board of AcademyHealth.

• Education: PhD in Health Policy, Finance and Management (Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health); DESS in Health Economics (Sorbonne University); MPH and BSc in Pharmaceutical Sciences (American University of Beirut)

Her research integrates human data science with machine learning to address social determinants of health, focusing on pharmacoeconomics, pharmacoepidemiology, and clinical informatics. She develops methods to optimize prescription drug safety, analyze health disparities, and support formulary management for Medicaid and managed care populations.

Recent publications examine topics like obstructive lung disease, hypertension management, diabetes disparities, and cost-effective treatment strategies. Her work frequently appears in journals such as Expert Review of Pharmacoeconomics & Outcomes Research, Value in Health, and CHEST.

Scientific honors include being named a Distinguished University Professor and leading teams to national victories in the P&T formulary competition. She mentors students across pharmacy, medicine, and public health, with mentees achieving 100% career placement in academia, government, and healthcare sectors.

Dr. Shaya leads community engagement initiatives through boards like Sinai Hospital and Our Daily Bread, and participates in US State Department programs. She is fluent in four languages: English, French, Arabic, and Spanish.
