Dr. Fabricio Tocco is a Lecturer in Spanish Language, Literature, and Film at The Australian National University, convening the Spanish and Portuguese Programs within the School of Literature, Languages & Linguistics. Born in Argentina with a multicultural heritage, he holds a PhD in Hispanic Studies from the University of British Columbia, alongside advanced degrees from Universitat de Barcelona and Université Paris 7. His research focuses on intersections of fiction, history, and political theory, particularly in 20th/21st century Latin American literature and film, trans-Indigenous studies, and popular genres like crime fiction and political thrillers.
Key achievements include his award-winning monograph *Latin American Detectives against Power* (2022), which critiques state power through detective narratives, and his upcoming book *Precarious Secrets: A History of the Latin American Political Thriller* (2025). He also directed the documentary *Precarious Secrets: The Political Thriller in the River Plate* (2024), exploring regional memory via thriller cinema.
Research interests span trans-Indigenous narratives across the Pacific, global South studies, and affect theory. He actively supervises research students and serves as President of the Association of Iberian and Latin American Studies of Australasia (2024–2026).
