Fabio Morabito

Fabio Morabito is an Assistant Professor (promoted to Associate Professor in July 2025) in the Department of Music at the University of Alberta, Faculty of Arts. He specializes in historical musicology, focusing on Western art music of the late 18th and early 19th centuries. His research explores topics such as canon formation, music collecting, performance practices, and the history of musicology. He holds a PhD from King’s College London (2017), and previously held the Lord Crewe Junior Research Fellowship at the University of Oxford (2017–2020).

• MA and BA in Music, University of Pavia-Cremona (Italy) and Hochschule für Musik Franz Liszt Weimar (Germany)

Research Interests: His work investigates how musicians engaged with publics, the materiality of musical objects, and the role of historical musicology in shaping musical identities. Current projects include a monograph on 19th-century composer identity and a British Academy-funded study on musicians as annotators. He also contributes to public musicology via digital exhibitions at the British Library.

Publications: Recent articles appear in Journal of the American Musicological Society, Critical Inquiry, and Music & Letters. His research bridges historical analysis with critical theory, examining elitism, authorship, and posthumanist perspectives in music studies.
