University of Minnesota Twin CitiesAbout
Evan Roberts is an Assistant Professor in the Population Studies and History of Medicine programs at the University of Minnesota. Previously, he served as a Lecturer at Victoria University of Wellington. His academic foundation includes a PhD in History from Minnesota, complemented by BA(Hons) degrees in Economics/History and a BSc in Mathematics/Statistics from Victoria University of Wellington.
His research examines demographic transitions, health standards, and economic patterns across Australasia and North America from the 19th-20th centuries. Primary investigations focus on:
- Health/living standards in New Zealand/US using anthropometric methods
- Married women's labor force participation patterns
- Long-term impacts of childhood conditions on adult outcomes
- Historical census data classification and record linkage methodologies
Publications demonstrate strong interdisciplinary trends, merging quantitative history with public health frameworks to analyze: life course epidemiology, mortality determinants, socioeconomic influences on health, and military medicine. Recent works frequently employ longitudinal datasets and causal inference models.
Honors include the Fulbright Scholarship. Research has been supported by the Health Research Council and Marsden Fund.
Roberts co-founded the Measuring the ANZACs project, a collaborative initiative with Minnesota Population Center, Zooniverse, Archives New Zealand, and Auckland Museum to crowdsource transcription of 140,000 WWI personnel records.
