Prof. Eva Orthmann is a Professor of Iranian Studies at the Georg-August-University Göttingen (since 2018) and a member of the Philosophical Faculty’s Council since 2019. Previously, she held professorships at the University of Bonn (2007–2018) and the University of Zurich (2000–2005). Her academic journey includes a doctorate from Martin Luther University Halle-Wittenberg (2000) and studies in Islamic and Iranian Studies at Eberhard Karls University Tübingen (1989–1995).
Her research focuses on the Mughal Empire, Islamic astrology, Indo-Persian cultural transfer, Ismāʿīliyya communities, and tribalism in historical contexts. She has organized major international conferences such as the 5th Perso-Indica Conference on Science and Philosophy (2018) and summer schools on Indo-Persian documents (Hyderabad, 2019). Key funded projects include studies on Ismāʿīliyya astronomy (DFG, 2009–2015) and Persian-Indic cultural interactions (ANR-DFG, 2014–2018).
Orthmann has served in academic leadership roles, including managing director of the Institute for Oriental and Asian Studies in Bonn (2010–2012) and roles in IT coordination. She is a liaison lecturer for the German Academic Scholarship Foundation and reviews for major funding bodies like the DFG and Swiss National Science Foundation.
Her expertise spans Persian, Arabic, Pahlavi, Urdu, and Turkish languages, supporting her work on primary sources from Iran and India. Office hours are held weekly in Göttingen.
