Eva Hageman is an Assistant Professor in both the Harriet Tubman Department of Women, Gender, and Sexuality Studies and the Department of American Studies at the University of Maryland. Her research focuses on television production, media ethnography, and the intersections of race, gender, and sexuality in cultural contexts. She holds a Ph.D. in American Studies from New York University (2016), with a joint certificate in Culture and Media.
Dr. Hageman’s work examines how reality television shapes contemporary racial discourses, as detailed in her book manuscript *“Relatable Meets Remarkable”: Crafting Race in the Reality Television Industry*. She has directed documentaries such as *Legendary* (2010) and *You, As Seen On TV* (2011), and her scholarship critiques post-racial ideologies and structural antiblackness. She has been affiliated with prestigious fellowships, including the University of Maryland President’s Postdoctoral Fellowship and the Ford Foundation Predoctoral Fellowship.
Her research has been presented at major conferences like the American Studies Association and Society for Cinema and Media Studies. Her recent publications address media representations of race and the persistence of systemic racism in cultural narratives.
