About
Professor Eugene Makeyev is a Professor of Molecular Biosciences at King's College London, affiliated with the School of Neuroscience and the Centre for Developmental Neurobiology. His research focuses on RNA-based regulation of gene expression, particularly in neurodevelopment and disease. He holds a PhD from the University of Helsinki and has held positions at Harvard University and Nanyang Technological University, Singapore. His work contributes to understanding mechanisms like alternative splicing, noncoding RNAs, and their roles in diseases such as cancer and neurodegenerative disorders.
Education:
- PhD in Molecular Biology, University of Helsinki (2001)
- Postdoctoral Research, Harvard University (with Tom Maniatis)
Research Interests: RNA processing, gene regulation, neurodevelopment, noncoding RNAs, and their implications in diseases. His lab investigates how RNA-based mechanisms control cell fate decisions during development and contribute to pathological conditions.
Selected Awards:
- Helsinki Biocenter Prize (2001)
- Leukemia & Lymphoma Society Career Development Award (2004)
- Singapore National Research Foundation Fellowship (2008)
Grants & Projects: Active projects include studying RNA compartments in cancer, mechanisms of alternative splicing in neurons, and roles of noncoding RNAs. Collaborations span institutions like the MRC and BBSRC.
Labs/Teams: Leads the Makeyev Lab at the Centre for Developmental Neurobiology, King's College London.
