Ethelene Whitmire is a Professor and Department Chair in Afro-American Studies at the University of Wisconsin–Madison. Her work focuses on African American history in the 20th century, transnational experiences, and archival methodologies. She holds a PhD from the University of Michigan, an MLS and BA from Rutgers University.
Research Interests: Whitmire explores African Americans abroad, particularly in Denmark, using archival research and Black feminist theory. Her scholarship bridges historical analysis with contemporary social dynamics.
Teaching: Courses include Introduction to Black Women’s Studies, Race & Gender in the Archives, and Transnational Experiences of African Americans in Denmark.
Publications: Her book Regina Anderson Andrews, Harlem Renaissance Librarian (2014) highlights overlooked figures in Black cultural history.
