About
Ersin Altin is an Adjunct Assistant Professor in the Department of History of Art and Design at the School of Liberal Arts & Sciences, Pratt Institute. His academic work intersects urban studies, design history, and digital technologies, with a focus on the perception of the body, home, and the city through design, fashion, and visual culture.
Education:
- PhD from Rutgers University
Altin's research explores the material world through historical analysis, examining how design and visual culture shape urban and domestic spaces. He is known for innovative projects including [AI]stanbul—an AI-driven exploration of Istanbul that functioned as a 'virtual native'—and 2boXes, architectural experiments on identity and non-places. His work bridges physical and digital realms, investigating technology's role in transforming cultural understanding and spatial experience.
His scholarly output, exemplified by the 2018 Digital Humanities conference presentation on digital cultural representation, demonstrates consistent focus on digital pedagogy and interactive tools. This aligns with his broader investigation of how digital technologies mediate relationships with place and identity.
Altin has advised students whose work appeared in exhibitions like 'History à la Carte' at NJIT. He led collaborative design projects such as the Fall 2017 NJIT studio that produced digital tools for cultural representation.
His creative practice involves interdisciplinary teams developing projects like [AI]stanbul, exhibited internationally at the Istanbul Design Biennial, Luma-Arles, and C-Mine in Genk. These works critically engage architecture, AI, and urban studies to explore perception and belonging.
