Erlin Barnard

Erlin Barnard is a Teaching Professor and Pedagogy Coordinator for Less-Commonly Taught Languages at the University of Wisconsin – Madison. She specializes in language pedagogy, materials development, and second language acquisition. Her role involves supervising instructors of less commonly taught languages and overseeing pedagogy development.

Education: Ph.D., Leeds Metropolitan University (Second Language Acquisition); MA, University of Hawai’i at Manoa (Second Language Studies).

Her research focuses on professionalizing instruction in less commonly taught languages, aligning with U.S. Department of Education priorities. She has conducted pedagogy workshops across the U.S., Indonesia, Malaysia, the Netherlands, and Singapore, and contributed to curriculum reviews and materials development for languages of Asia. In 2012, she received the Chancellor’s Award for Excellence in Service.

Key initiatives include the Ayo Membaca project (indonesianreading.wisc.edu) and textbooks such as Ayo Berbahasa Indonesia and Nah, Baca!.
