Erin R Barnett

Erin R Barnett, PhD is an Associate Professor of Psychiatry and The Dartmouth Institute at Dartmouth College's Geisel School of Medicine. She holds dual appointments in the Department of Psychiatry and The Dartmouth Institute, and is a faculty member at the Dartmouth Trauma Interventions Research Center and Vulnerable Children's Research Group.

Dr. Barnett's research program employs a comprehensive methodological approach combining qualitative and quantitative research methods, community-based participatory strategies, program development, and implementation science. Her primary research interests focus on trauma-informed child welfare practices, shared decision-making processes, and deprescribing protocols in child psychiatry. She has developed expertise in creating interventions that bridge clinical practice, research evidence, and policy implementation to improve outcomes for children in vulnerable populations.

Analysis of Dr. Barnett's publication record reveals a consistent focus on improving mental healthcare systems for vulnerable children, particularly those in foster care, with intellectual and developmental disabilities, and those exposed to trauma. Her work demonstrates expertise in implementation science, with numerous studies examining how evidence-based practices can be effectively integrated into community settings serving children and families.

Her current projects include statewide implementation of trauma-informed care for children with intellectual and developmental disabilities, improving safety for families affected by substance use, and developing deprescribing protocols for youth on psychotropic medications.

As an educator, Dr. Barnett serves as a Capstone Research Adviser and teaches Social and Behavioral Determinants of Health in the Master's of Public Health program. Her work has directly influenced practices and policies within multiple child-serving systems across New Hampshire and Vermont while building the evidence base for trauma-informed interventions and improving the skills of hundreds of students, trainees, and professionals.

Dr. Barnett is actively involved with the Dartmouth Trauma Interventions Research Center and Vulnerable Children's Research Group, where she collaborates with interdisciplinary teams to develop and implement trauma-informed practices across multiple sectors serving children and families, including child welfare, mental health, education, and healthcare systems.
