Erica Witkamp

Dr. Erica Witkamp is a Professor in Care for Loved Ones at Rotterdam University of Applied Sciences since 2019, with a PhD from Erasmus University Rotterdam (2015) focused on palliative and terminal hospital care. She leads the Care for Loved Ones research group under the Research Centre Innovations in Care.

Her research centers on supporting relatives caring for chronically/terminally ill patients, addressing challenges in healthcare-professional collaboration and caregiver resilience. Key focus areas include oncological, palliative, geriatric, and home care contexts within evolving societal frameworks of informal caregiving.

She collaborates extensively with Erasmus MC, Amsterdam UMC, LUMC, international universities (Cambridge), healthcare organizations (St. Leerhuizen, MantelzorgNL), and research centers (Nivel, Pharos). Current educational involvement includes the Nursing Programme, with plans to expand to other disciplines.

Her career spans clinical nursing, healthcare management, and research leadership, notably establishing nursing research and Evidence-Based Care at Erasmus MC Cancer Institute prior to her current role.
