Erica Blouch, MS, CGC is an Adjunct Assistant Professor in the Genetic Counseling program at the MGH Institute of Health Professions (IHP) and serves as a Senior Genetic Counselor at the Mass General Cancer Center. She has worked at the MGH Center for Cancer Risk Assessment since 2010, seeing patients in various cancer predisposition clinics including the Breast/Ovarian and GI Cancer Genetics clinic.
Her educational background includes a BS in Molecular Biology from Lehigh University and an MS in Genetic Counseling from Brandeis University.
Blouch specializes in hereditary endocrine tumor syndromes including Cowden syndrome, MEN1, MEN2, and pheochromocytoma syndromes, and serves as the lead genetic counselor of the MGH Endocrine Tumor Genetics clinics. Her research focuses on the challenges in genetic counseling for hereditary cancer syndromes, factors affecting genetic counseling referral and completion, and optimal resource utilization in genetic counseling services. She has witnessed significant advancements in the field, from single-gene testing to panel testing of up to 80 genes at a time, and has contributed to increased public awareness following Angelina Jolie's BRCA1 disclosure in 2013/2014.
As an educator, Blouch teaches the comprehensive 14-week Cancer Genetic Counseling course at IHP, where students complete standardized patient scenarios focused on breast cancer counseling and participate in clinical rotations in cancer clinics. Her work bridges clinical practice and education, emphasizing the importance of understanding hereditary causes of cancer to advance cancer biology knowledge and improve patient care.
