Eric Rice is a Professor and Associate Dean for Research at the USC Suzanne Dworak-Peck School of Social Work, co-founding the USC Center for AI in Society with the Viterbi School of Engineering. His work bridges social work and computer science to address societal challenges through AI-driven interventions. He holds a BA from the University of Chicago (1995), MA from Stanford University (1996), PhD from UCLA (2002), and postdoctoral training at Stanford (2004).
Rice’s research focuses on network science applications for high-risk youth, including homelessness prevention, HIV/AIDS intervention, and social support systems. His interdisciplinary approach combines artificial intelligence with social network analysis to design scalable solutions for vulnerable populations. Key areas include peer-led interventions, algorithmic resource allocation, and mental health support in homeless youth networks.
His publications (2018-2025) emphasize AI-enhanced social services, policy evaluation, and longitudinal studies of homelessness outcomes. Notable work includes HIV prevention via AI-augmented peer networks and algorithmic fairness in resource distribution. He received the Sterling C. Franklin Award (USC Social Work School) for distinguished faculty contributions.
Rice advises on federal homelessness initiatives and collaborates with NGOs on tech-driven solutions. His lab develops tools like the Vulnerability Index for housing prioritization and AI platforms for service delivery optimization. Current projects explore digital health equity, trauma-informed care, and anti-racist policy frameworks in social services.
