Eric R. Schlereth

Eric R. Schlereth is Associate Professor of History at UT Dallas's Harry W. Bass Jr. School of Arts, Humanities, and Technology, specializing in early North American history, citizenship, and borderlands studies. He holds a PhD from Brandeis University and MA/BA from University of Missouri systems.

His research examines how concepts of citizenship evolved alongside North American border formations, questioning national allegiance through historical studies of emigrant rights. Current work investigates legal contests over political belonging and mobility between 1750-1870.

Publications consistently analyze tensions between national identity and individual mobility rights. His scholarship traces historical precedents for contemporary debates about borders, migration, and citizenship renunciation.
