Eric Pentecost

Eric Pentecost is a Professor of Economics at Loughborough University, where he has been since 1987 and was promoted to full professor in 2002. He previously served as Head of the Department of Economics from 2007 to 2010. He holds a BA (CNAA), MA from the University of Warwick (1978), and a PhD from the University of London (1984). His expertise spans open economy macroeconomics, currency substitution, capital flows, exchange rate policy, and financial liberalisation. He is also a Visiting Professor at Claremont Graduate University (USA, 2016–present) and has held visiting roles at institutions like Vanderbilt University, the Kyiv-Mohyla Academy, and the University of Antwerp.

Eric’s research focuses on real exchange rate dynamics, small open economies, and the interplay between financial policies and economic stability. His textbooks include Macroeconomics: An Open Economy Approach (2000) and the forthcoming Developments in Macroeconomics (OUP, 2020). His work addresses global imbalances, Eurozone crises, and the impact of foreign aid on African economies.

Notable contributions include empirical analyses of financial contagion in European economies and the effects of exchange rate regimes on economic performance. His recent publications (2020–2025) explore post-pandemic global imbalances, policy responses to crises, and the epidemiology of financial crises.

Eric’s advisory and collaborative work includes roles at the Bank of England, Federal Reserve Bank of New York, and the University of Cambridge. His research groups and affiliations emphasize interdisciplinary approaches to macroeconomic challenges, particularly in transitional and developing economies.
