About
Eric Payton is Associate Professor in Materials Science & Engineering at the University of Cincinnati's College of Engineering and Applied Science. His research addresses critical materials sustainability through alloy design, microstructure evolution studies, and chemo-mechanical interaction analysis. Using computational modeling and advanced characterization techniques, his lab develops predictive tools for materials performance.
Prior to UC, he served for five years as Research Leader for the Metallic Materials and Processing Team at the Air Force Research Laboratory. He holds a Ph.D. from Ohio State University and has held positions at Alfred University, Ruhr University (Germany), and BAM (Germany). His work includes significant contributions to understanding particle dissolution, grain growth, and microstructure-property relationships in superalloys and refractory metals.
Research spans additive manufacturing of steels, high-temperature refractory alloys, and titanium processing. Recent publications focus on social implications of materials history and disinformation detection tools. He has secured over $4 million in research funding from NSF, DOE, and industry partners.
