Eric James Mackay

Eric James Mackay is a Professor at the School of Energy, Geoscience, Infrastructure and Society and holds the Energi Simulation Chair in CCUS and Reactive Flow Simulation at Heriot-Watt University’s Institute for GeoEnergy Engineering. His research focuses on fluid flow in porous media, CO2 storage, and oilfield scale management. He has over 100 publications and consults extensively for the oil industry while teaching Reservoir Simulation since 1990.

Education:

• PhD in Petroleum Engineering, Heriot-Watt University

Research Interests: His work spans CO2 capture/utilization, reactive transport modeling (pore to reservoir scale), and optimizing reservoir performance through numerical simulation. Notable projects include collaboration with Scottish Carbon Capture and Storage (SCCS) on secure CO2 storage methods and leadership in the Flow Assurance and Scale Team (FAST).

Recent Research Trends: Recent articles emphasize minimizing mineral scaling risks in CO2 storage and oilfield operations, optimizing brine composition for injection, and geochemical reactivity in sandstone reservoirs. These studies address practical challenges in energy sustainability and subsurface engineering.
