Medical University of South CarolinaAbout
Dr. Eric Daniel Hamlett is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine at the Medical University of South Carolina (MUSC). His research focuses on understanding the role of lipoxygenase systems in neurodegenerative diseases, particularly Alzheimer’s disease and Down syndrome. He leads a lab developing novel methods using extracellular vesicles (EVs) to assess brain lipid metabolites non-invasively. His work bridges clinical and molecular neuroscience, with emphasis on omega-6/omega-3 fatty acid imbalances and their impact on neuroinflammation.
Research interests include early drivers of neurodegeneration, resolution of inflammation via specialized pro-resolving mediators (SPMs), and leveraging EVs as diagnostic tools. Key projects involve clinical trials for biomarker discovery in Down syndrome and Alzheimer’s, as well as collaborations on EV-based monitoring of neuronal health. Dr. Hamlett’s studies highlight interdisciplinary approaches to aging-related brain disorders.
Notable contributions include publications on exosomal biomarkers, tau pathology, and SARS-COV-2 impacts in Down syndrome patients. His lab collaborates widely to advance technologies for brain lipid profiling using blood-derived EVs, with potential applications in precision medicine and disease prevention.
