Eric Cohen is an Adjunct Fellow at the Ethics and Public Policy Center (EPPC) and a member of EPPC's board of directors. He serves as the executive director of the Tikvah Fund and is the publisher of the Jewish Review of Books and Jewish Ideas Daily. Cohen is also editor-at-large of The New Atlantis, a quarterly journal focused on the ethical, political, and social implications of modern science and technology, which he edited from its founding until February 2007.
Cohen's research spans multiple intersecting fields. His primary interests include bioethics and the philosophical implications of technological advancement, particularly as explored in his book In the Shadow of Progress: Being Human in the Age of Technology (2008). He is deeply engaged with Jewish studies, examining Jewish education, identity, and political thought. His work on conservatism, especially Jewish conservatism, addresses questions of cultural identity, political philosophy, and the challenges facing contemporary American society.
Cohen's scholarly output reveals consistent themes across two decades: the tension between technological advancement and human flourishing, the crisis of meaning in modern society, and the role of Jewish thought in addressing contemporary cultural challenges. His recent work increasingly focuses on Jewish education and identity, while maintaining his longstanding concern with bioethics and the ethical implications of scientific progress.
Cohen's scholarly contributions have earned him significant recognition:
- Fulbright Scholar (2000)
- Phillips Foundation Fellow (2001)
As executive director of the Tikvah Fund and publisher of prominent Jewish intellectual publications, Cohen has shaped important conversations in Jewish thought and American conservatism. His previous roles include managing editor of The Public Interest and serving as a senior consultant to the President's Council on Bioethics. Cohen's interdisciplinary approach bridges philosophy, ethics, Jewish studies, and public policy, making significant contributions to debates about technology, human nature, and cultural identity.
