Eric C. Leuthardt, MD, MBA, is the Shi H. Huang Professor of Neurological Surgery at Washington University in St. Louis. He serves as Vice-Chair of Innovation in the Department of Neurosurgery, Chief of the Division of Neurotechnology, and Director of the Center for Innovation in Neuroscience and Technology and the Brain Laser Center. His work integrates neurosurgery, biomedical engineering, and computational science to advance brain-computer interfaces, neuro-oncology, and neuroprosthetics.
Education:
- BS in Biology and Theology, Saint Louis University (1992–1995)
- MD, University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine (1995–1999)
- MBA, Washington University (2023–2024)
- Residency in Neurological Surgery, Washington University/Barnes-Jewish Hospital (2000–2005)
- Fellowships: Neurological Surgery (Beaumont Hospital, 2004), Spine and Epilepsy (University of Washington, 2005–2006)
Research Interests: Dr. Leuthardt’s research focuses on decoding brain activity for clinical applications, including brain-computer interfaces for paralysis treatment, laser ablation for tumors, and advanced diagnostics for neurological disorders. He pioneered neurotechnology innovations such as real-time brain mapping during surgery and neuroprosthetic devices to restore motor functions.
Awards & Recognition:
- Top Doctor designation by Castle Connolly
- Emmy Award for his educational program BrainWorks
- Over 100 patents filed for medical devices and BCI technologies
Labs & Initiatives: The Leuthardt Lab explores BCI implications for patient care. The Brain Laser Center develops minimally invasive laser therapies for brain tumors. He leads interdisciplinary teams at Washington University’s School of Medicine and collaborates across engineering and clinical disciplines.
