Erez Levon

Erez Levon is a Professor of Sociolinguistics at the University of Bern, where he is affiliated with the Center for the Study of Language and Society and the Walter Benjamin Kolleg. He also serves as a Visiting Professor of Sociolinguistics at the School of Languages, Linguistics and Film within the Department of Linguistics at Queen Mary University of London. He holds a PhD from New York University (NYU).

His research focuses on how language variation reflects and constructs social meaning, particularly examining links between language use and social categories like gender, sexuality, class, and national identity. Key interests include sociolinguistic cognition, speech perception, and the intersection of language with systems of inequality.

Levon’s work bridges theory and empirical research, often employing experimental and corpus-based methods. He maintains an active research profile, with outputs exploring topics such as style-shifting, linguistic attitudes, and the sociopolitical dimensions of language variation. His affiliations include leading roles in interdisciplinary projects at both institutions.
