Erdem SÖNMEZ

Assitant Professor Erdem Sönmez is a historian affiliated with the Department of History at Ankara Sosyal Bilimler Üniversitesi. He holds a Ph.D. from Bilkent University and has held visiting positions at Harvard University, SOAS London, and Siena University. His research focuses on the intellectual, cultural, and political history of the Ottoman Empire and modern Turkey, with a particular emphasis on historiography, nationalism, and methodological frameworks.

• Education: PhD in History (Bilkent University, 2018); M.A. and B.A. from Istanbul and Istanbul Technical Universities.
• Research Interests: Ottoman historiography, nationalism studies, auto/biography, and the Annales School's influence on Turkish historiography.

His publications examine topics such as late Ottoman historical discipline formation, early republican historiography, and the intellectual trajectory of figures like Ahmed Rıza. He has contributed to journals like Modern Intellectual History and British Journal of Middle Eastern Studies.

Dr. Sönmez has authored two Turkish-language books and reviewed for leading journals including American Historical Review and Journal of Cold War Studies. His work challenges conventional narratives about Ottoman-Turkish historiography and highlights understudied connections between pre-modern political thought and constitutionalism.
