Eran Shor

Eran Shor is a Professor in the Department of Sociology at McGill University. His research spans political conflict and human rights, terrorism and counterterrorism, the sociology of health, ethnicity and nationalism, determinants of sexual attraction, media coverage of marginalized groups, and meta-analysis methodologies. He holds a PhD from Stony Brook University (2010) and has been affiliated with McGill since joining as faculty.

Shor’s work critically examines state counterterror policies, media representation of minorities, and mortality impacts of social stressors. Notable projects include large-scale meta-analyses on mortality linked to unemployment, widowhood, and social support. His research on incest avoidance in Israeli kibbutzim challenges biological explanations, offering sociological insights.

His publications include Aggression in Pornography: Myths and Realities (2021) and edited volumes on counterterrorism and human rights. Recent articles address racial bias in media, gender disparities in news coverage, and the effects of counterterror legislation on civil liberties.

Shor has secured major grants including SSHRC Insight Grants ($245,103, 2022–2028) and William Dawson Chair funding. His awards include ASA paper awards for work on sexuality and political sociology. Current research explores LGBTQ+ experiences with online pornography and the sociological impacts of climate migration.

Shor advises undergraduate and graduate students in sociology and collaborates with international scholars on meta-analytic projects. His lab focuses on quantitative sociology, media analysis, and global health disparities.
